CBG and CBD. How crucial are these two chemical components of hemp, how are they used, and what are their differences?
Properties and Uses of CBD
CBD is one of the main components of hemp and is found in plentiful amounts in the plant but is also produced by chemical precursors in the body. The chemical structure of CBD is C 21 H 30 O 2, which means 21 atoms of C (Carbon), 30 atoms of H (Hydrogen), and 2 atoms of O (Oxygen). Here, two hydrogen atoms turn into a group of OH (hydroxyl group).
CBD also has the highest concentration of any cannabinoid found in the hemp plant, however, levels are low when the plant blooms. This is when THC production is at its highest.
CBD is widely the most popular cannabinoid because of its wellness properties, such as helping ease chronic pain, hypertension, nausea, and vomiting. Because of its lack of psychotropic effects, CBD is also an excellent weapon to have in your arsenal to reduce inflammation.

Properties and Uses of CBG
CBG is another component of hemp but is only found when the hemp plant blooms. As the blooming phase is short, the levels of CBG in the plant are usually low.
The chemical structure of CBG is C 21 H 30 O 2, which means 21 atoms of C (Carbon), 30 atoms of H (Hydrogen), and 2 atoms of O (Oxygen). In CBG, the COOH groups are connected to the atom groups in a cyclohexene shape.
Despite its primary origin being in the hemp plant, CBG can also be produced inside the human body from chemical precursors. It shows promise in being used as a therapeutic solution due to its antifungal, antibacterial, and antiparasitic properties. Plus, CBG doesn’t possess psychotropic properties either.
Comparing CBD and CBG
CBD | CBG |
High potency | Low potency |
Established cannabinoid | Still in the research phase |
Products always available, reliable and safe to use | Hard to find products |
Best option in the market | Still in the testing phase |
Always present in hemp | Only present during hemp’s bloom phase (a really short timeframe) |
